Fit for a New Bike

First measure, then improve

If you are in the market for a new bike, one of the most important considerations in your purchase will be fit.  First and foremost, you want to be sure you select the proper frame size for any brand/model you are considering.  How do you know what size is best?  Most customers go to a shop and get the "eyeball" test from the salesperson.  At best, you will get an inseam measurement and told that you're a "54cm," referring to seatpost height.  The problem is that Brand X's "54" is not the same as Brand Y's "54."  And it ignores the most important measurement - top tube length.

ARB's Typical Fit Process for a New Bike Buyer
When shopping for a new bike, some customers come in knowing exactly what frame size they need for a particular brand.  This is usually due to having previously received a bike fit and their experience with a particular brand. However, if you are unsure of what size frame you should be riding, we do the following:

  1. Take your body measurements at the BioSize fitting station.  We'd much prefer to fit you in person but if that is not possible, there is a method for you to take your own measurements.
  2. Determine your optimal top tube length and seat tube height based on body dimensions.
  3. Determine the optimal frame sizes for the brands/models you are considering based on the above dimensions.  It is not unusual to find that you can fit on two different size frames due to the ability to make adjustments to stem, saddle height, etc.  However, different setups lead to different tradeoffs in bike handling and responsiveness.
  4. Once you have purchased your new bike, we suggest riding it for a couple of weeks before coming back for the actual fitting.  This is where we analyze your position on the bike and riding style to make final changes to the stem, saddle and handlebar.

New Bike Finder Fit - A Fit-Centric Approach to Buying Your Next Bike!
ARB has introduced a new approach to buying your next bike.  Get fit on our fully automated size cycle FIRST, then get a recommendation of the 2-5 bikes (frames) among the numerous brand/models we offer that fit YOU best.  The key difference to this approach is that to find your optimal frame, we take into account much more than just static body dimensions.  We determine exactly how you prefer to ride based on numerous other factors such as flexibility, weight, previous injuries and cycling goals.  It also requires that you have a bit more of an open mind.  While you may have had your eye on Brand A/Model B, it may turn out that Brand X/Model Y is more suited to you from a fit standpoint.
