Cycling 201: Clipping In & Riding Confidently!

Who Is This Class For?

Our Cycling 201 class is meant for those who have at least some limited riding experience, including a general ability to shift gears when needed and a basic knowledge of the rules of the road & paths.  You may have taken our Cycling 101 class or learned the basics from a friend.  However, you are probably still riding with your tennis shoes and haven't ridden with a group.  Cycling 201 will help you take the next step to becoming a cyclist!

This class is perfect for someone who has bought their first pair of cycling shoes and "clip-in" pedals. Note that you can purchase these just prior to the class.  Most students will have an existing bike or recently purchased one.  If you have an existing bike, it's important that it fits properly.  If you aren't sure, bring it anyway and we'll take a look.  If it doesn't, we'll set you up on one of our rentals.  If you don't have a bike, but have some limited riding experience in the past, we can just set you up on one of our rentals.

What Do I Need to Bring?

What You'll Experience

For just $65, here is what you'll experience in our three hour session of Cycling 201:

  • Meet with your Cycling Instructor
  • Check overall fit of your current bike (if out of range, we'll use one from our rental fleet)
  • Cleat Fit: Optional (for an additional $30, which is 60% off the normal cleat fit price)
  • Place bike on stationary trainer and practice "clipping in" and "clipping out" (kind of like inserting a ski boot into a binding)
  • Review shifting/braking basics and rules of the road & bike paths
  • Once confident with clipping in and out on the stationary trainer, take it outside by doing a few loops in the business park with some practice stop/starts
  • Go over the steps of a pre-ride basic bike maintenance/safety quick check
  • Leave the business park for a 19 mile ride (at an easy pace) where we will work on:
    • Timely and smooth shifting
    • Positioning on the road and handling intersections
    • Riding a straight line, following a wheel, & drafting
    • Tips & practice on climbing, cornering and descending
  • Return to ARB Cyclery eager for your next ride and a cappuccino on the house!
