Cycling 101: Getting Started

Benefits of Cycling

As you might guess, the staff here at ARB Cyclery loves cycling and we love getting new people out enjoying this wonderful sport.  Here are just some of the amazing benefits cycling has to offer (compare to other sports such as running, tennis, golf, skiing or going to the gym):

  • Amazing for cardio fitness & weight loss/control
  • Enjoy the great outdoors & lots of scenery
  • Low impact on the joints
  • Can be done in a social atmosphere where you spend time with friends and meet new people
  • Can be done solo for much needed mental "recharge" time
  • Can start right from your own home
  • Can double as transportation (commute and workout at the same time!)
  • Cycling outside is free!  No court fees, greens fees or lift tickets.
  • Just plain fun!  (Remember the first time you rode on two wheels?)

Who Is This Class For?

You know how to actually balance and ride on two wheels but are new to the world of cycling.  You are sold on the benefits but perhaps have been reluctant to try cycling because of one or more of the following:   a fear of riding near cars, the cost of a new bike, not understanding which type of bike or equipment to buy, not sure about that cycling clothing, those skinny bike seats, fear of getting a flat tire, not understanding how to use a bike's gears, don't want to be "hunched" over, or simply don't have anyone to ride with.

If this sounds like you, then ARB's Cycling 101 is the perfect class!  We will address all those issues that may have been preventing you from giving cycling a try.

What Do I Need to Bring?

What You'll Experience

Here is your opportunity to be introduced to cycling in a safe and friendly environment without spending a lot of money on equipment.  For just $65, here is what you'll experience in our two and a half-hour session of Cycling 101: (note: up to 3 students can be accommodated per session, however, you may end up with a private lesson!)

  • Meet with your Cycling Instructor
  • Get set up with the proper size bike from our rental fleet
  • Get equipped with the proper accessories (Gear List, including what to bring)
  • Go over helmet fit
  • Get proper positioning & begin practicing shifting/braking with bicycle on a stationary trainer
  • Learn basic bike handling skills plus rules of the road and rules for bike paths
  • Take it outside by doing a few loops on the lightly trafficked and very wide Sky Park Circle
  • Leave the business park for an 8 - 12 mile ride (at an easy pace) featuring 50% off-road bike paths, 50% on-road bike lanes (distance is flexible depending on student and time)
  • Return to ARB Cyclery eager for your next ride and a cappuccino on the house!

What's Next?

  • I'm hooked, get me rolling with one of your introductory cycle packages!
  • Would like to take home a rental bike and ride some more before purchasing my own bike.  Sign me up for a rental.
  • Register for Cycling 201 - with a rental bike or your new bike!
  • Cycling isn't for me.  Hey, we get it, cycling isn't for everyone.  But at least you opened yourself up to a new experience and gave it a try!
