Advantages of a Custom Frame

Every human body is different. Beyond height and inseam length, when you take into account factors such as weight, flexibility, musculature, fitness level, training conditions, objectives, along with any number of other extraneous factors, you end up with a unique set of needs for every individual cyclist.

Companies that mass produce bikes average out the inherent differences between individuals and, thus, expect them to fit neatly into a sizing system based on incremental numerical patterns of change in tube length or angle which, for many riders, are not always ideal. Take, for example, the case of three cyclists illustrated below. Each is 5’10” and, based solely upon their height they are fit to ride a 56cm stock frame.

Stock frame geometries, however, fail to take into account the inherent differences between the three riders (leg-torso ratio, weight, flexibility) as well as their riding, training, or racing goals. Below is a profile of three unique 5'10" cyclists each needing a different frame:

  • Cyclist #1 – Century Rider: This rider’s bike design would be  based on a classic geometry for all-around performance. The wheel base would be made slightly longer to facilitate long-range stability. The head tube would also be lengthened to accommodate this particular individual’s preference for a more upright position.
  • Cyclist #2 – Climber: Long femurs and a short torso lead us to a relaxed seat angle. This rider wants a stable, predictable bike to fly downhill, so we would lower the bottom bracket height, stretch out the chain-stays to balance out the weight distribution and cap it off with a relaxed head angle and matching (long) rake.
  • Cyclist #3 – Criterium Monster: Start with the obvious-this rider has short, powerful legs to go with an extended torso. We would consequently opt for a steep seat angle and short chain-stays to match. From there, a higher bottom bracket, steep head angle and short fork rake would be selected to optimize handling and maximize speed in the turns. Given this individual’s size we might recommend a beefed-up tube configuration, whether carbon, titanium or steel, to handle their extra wattage.

So while each of the three riders can be retro-fitted to the same basic frame by a good bike fit, (like the Retül Fit we offer at ARB Cyclery), by altering stem lengths, head tube spacers and/or saddle position, these adjustments can result in handling issues, high speed wobbling or a shift in weight distribution that negatively affects overall performance. Different body types, different potential, different goals…the same bike?  We don’t think so.

It's time to consider going custom!

ARB Cyclery works with custom frame manufacturer, Mosaic Cycles
Mosaic Cycles is a family operated small batch builder of handmade bicycles. Precision fabrication and efficient business practice balance Mosaic as an industry leader, creating meaningful cycling moments and enduring products. Mosaic partners globally with select bicycle shops, bringing a tailored experience to each rider.

The process begins with your fitting, working with a Mosaic Dealer to dial in your geometry for a one of a kind bike or building within our stock size program. Once the geometry is decided we move into fabrication. Each bike undergoes Mosaic’s small batch process, one at a time with delivery in just over a month from placing an order. Our experienced team of framebuilders pride themselves on the precision, attention to detail and high caliber finish work put into each bike that leaves the shop.

Finally the bike moves into finish. We believe that fit and performance should be balanced with aesthetics. Subtle etching and polished logos create a style uniquely Mosaic, even from a distance. If color is what you are looking for, we have many schemes to choose from. All Mosaic frames are painted locally by Spectrum Paint and Powderworks. Your Mosaic Dealer will walk you through all the paint and finish options for your bike during the ordering process. Your bike is delivered to your Mosaic Dealer within 6 weeks and built by their professional staff, ensuring your first ride is a dialed one.
