About & Our Fit Specialist

The Importance of Proper Bike Fit
Why do we believe bike fit is so important? It is the number one factor in cycling that helps keep you on the bike and enjoying the sport.  If you are not fit properly to your bike, you will not be able to ride any significant distance without discomfort and worst case, you may experience an injury. The result?  You'll be off the bike.  You should be able to ride your bike for 100+ miles without any significant discomfort.  In addition, a good fit will improve your overall cycling performance because you will be in a better bio-mechanical position.  To summarize, a good bike fit will facilitate three outcomes:

  • Increased Comfort
  • Increased Performance
  • Reduced Chance of Injury

Fit Philosophy
Our fit process comprises three components: The subjective, where we use our trained eye and intuition to evaluate a position on the bicycle and subsequent changes; the objective, which is provided by our own body assessment and the precise 3D measurement of our Retul motion capture system; and client feedback. Specifically we'll ask targeted questions that relate to pedal smoothness and efficiency and where a subject feels pressure or discomfort. We believe all three form the trifecta to a successful fitting process.  What this means is that the subject is involved and has a say in the overall fit procedure.  This ensures a true collaborative approach.

When used in conjunction with our experience, the objective and precise measurements we get from our Retul system and by listening to you, your input makes the fit.  In this way, in one sense, it is your fit, not our fit, and most fully takes into consideration your comfort level, cycling history, injuries and other factors that are unique to you. This is the way it should be.

The F.I.S.T. triathlon fit protocol takes that collaborative effort to another level.  It is essentially three fits at three different seat tube angles, first starting with saddle position, and then dialing in the cockpit position with smaller and smaller incremental changes until the subject has difficulty discerning one change from the next.  It is the most thorough method to dial in fit that we know of.
